Brickney Spears: Oops! … I Built It Again

Romi Lee/ Senior / Martel

You hear someone screaming at you and look up to see a girl rollerblading forward full speed. Who could it be? Ding ding ding! It’s your advisor Romi Lee! This senior Kinesiology and Religion major hails from Edina, Minnesota (trust me, she’ll never let you forget). When she’s not on that premed grind, you can find Romi practicing TikTok dances, online shopping, binging her favorite show, My 600-lb Life, and eating corn dogs. Don’t let her small stature fool you, Romi spends many of her nights at the rec getting S W O L E and slinging out drinks as a bartender at Pub. So hit her up for her workout routine or a bowl of tasty pub mix! Romi’s a woman of many talents, from creating art pieces that will blow your mind to dissecting hearts in the BRC for cardiothoracic research. She never forgets to uplift fellow women too by serving as the VP of the American Association of University Women and volunteering at the women’s resource center! Congrats! You’ve won the advisor lottery with this one! With Romi on your side, there will never be a dull moment so get ready to meet your new friend, mentor, and biggest supporter!

John Zhang / Junior / Martel

When you walk into Martel’s commons and hear someone screaming “LET’S GOOOOO,” on the very top of their lungs, it’s probably your advisor, John “Boyang” Zhang. This junior BIOE pre-med hails from New Hyde Park, New York, and is passionate about oxygen concentration graphs, anemia, and kidney failure. Aside from academic pursuits, you can find John on the volleyball court, at the Rec, in his room playing League of Legends, or biking the WRONG way on the Inner Loop. If you’re ever up late, chances are John is too, pulling one of his many Project-Based Learning (PBL) all-nighters of the semester. Around 2:00am, you can probably catch him in the Martel kitchen making ramen, and if you ask him nicely, he’ll also make you a bowl. Besides being an expert at forgetting to put on his night contacts before sleeping, John also excels in all things LPAP-related, taking at least one every semester. In terms of hobbies, this guy can cook a MAD cheesecake or chicken parmesan during any time of day for you. He refuses to use a calendar to keep track of his events but manages to make every single one of his meetings (except for that one Camp Kesem meeting). If you ever forget what your advisor looks like, don’t panic. You can always spot John anywhere since he is always the one smiling….literally ALL the time. With John as your advisor, you will be sure to have an incredible time at Martel and at Rice!

Esha Ghai / Sophomore / Martel

Esha Ghai, a chia pudding enthusiast and avid drinker of cold brews, is a sophomore majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and minoring in Business. This driven, passionate, and hilarious person has lived all around the world from Sugarland to Singapore but now she calls the Bay Area home. You might spot Esha around campus spending all her tetra at Coffee House, getting swole at the Rec, or studying in her second home, Fondy 6th. Outside of classes and preparing for her inevitable world domination, Esha is one of the funniest people that you’ll ever meet. If you ever need a laugh, google/apple calendar and study tips, or a shoulder to cry on, Esha is the perfect person to go to. She can’t wait to meet you all this fall!!

Ricky Robinson / Senior / Baker

To the new students reading this… YOU HAVE STRUCK GOLD. Hailing from Woodbury, Connecticut, this Biochemistry & Cell Biology major is literally a “model” student – ask him about the time he won 3rd place in a beauty pageant performing science experiments. With a clean cut and a wardrobe made up almost exclusively of button down shirts that he meticulously steams in preparation for each week, Ricky is a man of impeccable style. Did I mention he owns a purple suit? The only time you may find that Ricky isn’t overdressed
is when he’s on another crazy adventure whether its training for a spartan run in barefoot running shoes, climbing a mountain during a hailstorm, sailing for 7 straight hours, or paragliding with a member of the Argentinian national team. When Ricky isn’t wowing his fellow Bakerites with his encyclopedic football knowledge, you may find him watching a new movie (or re-watching a Christopher Nolan film), jamming to Brick + Mortar (other favorite artists include Young Rising Sons and Vinyl Theatre), or serving as the internal Vice
Chair for Rice’s Honor Council. And if you still haven’t found him, check the trees – there’s a high probability that he’s in a hammock, nose-deep in a book (favorites include The Magicians, Game of Thrones, Dune, and Good Omens). Ricky is one of the most kind, genuine and dependable friends that I’ve met. As your advisor and future friend, Ricky will truly be there to support you through thick and thin.
