The college system was instituted over 50 years ago in 1957 and is a defining characteristic of Rice University.
Some people may mistake the residential colleges as dorms, but they are much, much more than that. A residential college is where undergraduates sleep, eat, study, play, form friendships, take on positions of leadership, and end up spending a good chunk of their undergraduate career just hanging out.
